Design Workshops: Design Workshops: The Power of Actionable Communication

design workshops

Here’s some advice on how to facilitate common aspects of a design workshop – getting the group acquainted, brainstorming, sketching and sharing ideas. With a rough overview in place, it’s time to create a workshop outline. Take a look back at the goals you listed, and think about what activities you need to do in your workshop to achieve them.

Typical activities during UX design workshops

Think of this as a limited resource of energy and time your group has. The more specific the problem you are trying to solve the more concrete your solutions will be. If you were conducting an in-person workshop, this is where you’d create physical or digital prototypes of your ideas, ready to be tested on real users. However, when conducting a remote design thinking workshop, you’ll need to adapt this stage slightly and set it as an independent post-workshop activity. The next segment of your workshop is dedicated to ideation—coming up with ideas and potential solutions to address the user problem.

Don’t be afraid of sketching or prototyping

We’ve spent over 15 years researching this topic and have learned from facilitating hundreds of workshops and programs. We’d like to share with you some of the high-impact learning design practices so that your workshop facilitation benefits. This  guide provides an approach to designing workshops, leveraging effective strategies and best practices. From understanding your audience to leveraging technology and measuring success, each aspect of workshop design is crucial for creating an engaging and educational experience. Crafting an effective workshop requires a strategic approach that aligns with the needs and objectives of both the facilitator and the participants.

Do not worry about how beautiful things look, make sure all participants are engaged not only in problem framing but also in prototyping and sketching the solutions. After you have set a clear objective, it's time to pick the right tools (activities) to reach it. Choice of activities will depend not only on expected output but also on time you will have and participants you can invite. You don’t want to start asking basic questions, to get up to speed with the audience.

Ideally, you’ll have a separate table for all the materials and equipment (more on that in step three!). There are many reasons you might hold a Design Thinking workshop; perhaps you need ideas for a new product, or maybe you’re looking for ways to improve an existing one. It could be that you need to come up with a drastic strategy for regaining consumer trust after a PR disaster! If you’re running a workshop for a client, perhaps the main purpose is to teach them about Design Thinking and how it can be applied to their business. In this case, you can still solve a real-world problem based on their product and industry. Detail the activities in each section

In an in-person workshop, you’d go through the “building empathy” phase together; however, for a remote workshop, you’ll need to set this as an assignment for participants to complete in advance. You’ll want to set the pre-work and get every onboarded well ahead of time, so try to have this preliminary call at least two weeks before the workshop is scheduled to take place. Because of remote and hybrid work, I currently do virtual workshops more often. The difference between in-person and virtual design workshops is how you manage the energy level of your participants. Otherwise, finding suitable participants will take a long time, hurting your credibility in facilitating a design thinking workshop in the company. In this article, I’m going to share how I’ve facilitated and organized many design thinking workshops throughout my UX career. We’ll discuss how to prepare for the workshop, how to conduct one, and what to expect as the next steps once you’ve completed your design thinking workshop. As explained by the Nielsen Norman Group, a journey map is a visualization of the process that a person goes through in order to accomplish a goal.

Believing there is nothing more sacred than ‘home’, the most reliable source of knowledge are the people who occupy it. One of the best schools for graphic design in Los Angeles, Chapman University was founded in Orange in 1861. Amongst the 11 schools that Chapman has to offer is the Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences which, amongst its various degree offerings, has a Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA) in Graphic Design. Chapman’s Graphic Design degree is a combination of both exploratory and research-based processes, with students developing a professional graphic design portfolio throughout the course.

Its application in Learning & Development (L&D) for designing workshops is not just innovative but also highly effective. It’s our secret sauce that has helped us to design over 100 workshops and programs for group sizes of 1 to 2 million. This guide delves into using the Design Thinking process – Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test – to create workshops that are not only informative but transformative. Coupled with a mindset that embraces creativity, collaboration, and user-centricity, this approach can elevate your workshop designs to new heights.

The resulting private art university offers degrees in, to name a few, Character Animation, Creative Writing, Film Directing, Digital Art and, of course, Graphic Design. Founded in 1918, Otis College of Art & Design was the first dedicated independent school of art in Los Angeles. One of the best graphic design colleges in Los Angeles, Otis is located in Westchester in Los Angeles, close to LAX Airport and Marina Del Rey. The college is housed in Eliot Noyes’s former IBM Aerospace Headquarters, an American Mid Century Modernist and Brutalist icon. It takes clear and deliberate planning to run a successful workshop, and throwing exercises together is just the tip of the workshop-planning iceberg!

Try to organize these activities into distinct chunks of your workshop. Assign a rough time estimate to each section, and as you plan out more of the details, you can go back and adjust the length of your workshop as needed. Consider that each activity usually takes longer than expected, so make sure to leave some buffer room. Collaboration comes in many flavors, from small informal working sessions and group critiques to full-blown workshops.
